How can I control my sons destructive behavior with out meds?

He when back is turned will peel pain off the wall. out either boredom or out of anger. usually when i go to do the laundry he gets in to this bad behavior. i don't want to drug him as i just want to know more of how to deter him from doing this firm discpline didn't work. he's 5 years old.
